Theory and History of Violence
Studying history and society should always also entail the study of violence. For violence–whether threatened, perpetrated, or endured–has been an ever-present phenomenon throughout the history of humankind. As the twentieth century came to an end, hopes were raised for a brief moment that we had seen the end of an era of extreme violence and that new strategies for harnessing unprecedented potentials for violence might be developed.
