The Hamburg Institute for Social Research has long been organizing a large number of activities such as research projects, conferences, and lectures in cooperation with German and foreign institutions. In recent years, efforts to establish long-term research collaboration have been intensified, leading in particular to agreements with Leuphana University in Lüneburg and with the Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP) at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

More recently, closer contact has also been established with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt, the Vienna Institute for Human Sciences, and the German Historical Institute in Rome. Here it is also worth noting that the “Study Group for Modern Social History” has been “at home” at HIS for some time now, creating new opportunities for collaboration in particular for historians at the Institute.

Last but not least, HIS always endeavors to reach a wider public in Hamburg. Recent collaborations have begun with the Thalia Theater, the Theaterakademie in Hamburg, the Jüdischer Salon am Grindel , and the Museum der Arbeit in Hamburg-Barmbek, making the Institute’s research results accessible to these institutions and initiating conversations between groups that otherwise have little contact with each other.
