The Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS) assures you that your data will be used in accordance with applicable data protection regulations, the German Telemedia Act, the Interstate Broadcasting Treaty, the German Federal Data Protection Act, and other data protection regulations.
Your personal data will be stored, processed and used in machine-readable format exclusively for the purpose for which you provided them. Exceptions are possible only if you have agreed to another use.
Below we would like to inform you how and for what purposes your data will be used.
This declaration applies to all products and services available through www.his-online.de and includes the products and services of the Hamburger Edition publishing house and the Mittelweg 36 journal.
The data collected by us are personal data that you provide voluntarily by subscribing to our newsletter, completing a survey, or using similar services and tracking information that you transmit to us when you use our products and services, as described in detail below:
1. Personal data
When you use one of our services we may collect, process, store, and use your personal data to the extent necessary to enable you to use the service. We guarantee that your data will be treated confidentially.
On the basis of your voluntary consent, we are entitled to collect, process, or store personal data, and to combine it with other data, archive it, and use it. After receiving your consent, we may pass personal data on to third parties for advertising and market research purposes and other commercial services. If you have approved the use of personal data for special purposes subject to your express consent, you may revoke that consent at any time. We will then delete the data. If data has been transmitted to third parties with your consent, we will immediately inform these third parties and request them to delete the data. You may limit the use of your data. Should you do so, your data will only be deleted within the limits of the restriction.
We are entitled to access this data to avoid technical disruptions and to meet our statutory and contractual obligations. We may disclose your data without your consent if:
• we engage other enterprises that support us in contract fulfilment, for example, by processing orders and billing, by providing customer services, by dispatching goods, or by rendering other functions necessary for the provision of services.
• we are legally or judicially obliged to disclose personal data. When permitted, we will inform you immediately about any such disclosure.
You are entitled to view, correct, and delete the personal data you provide at any time. If this is not technically possible at the address where you provided the data, you may send an email to email@example.com to request, verify and, if necessary, change or delete your personal data.
2. Tracking information
When you access the HIS website, our servers automatically collect and store general, non-personal usage data, such as the name of your internet service provider, the website from which you are visiting us, the type of browser you use, and your IP address. These data can be analyzed for statistical purposes, but with the individual user remaining anonymous. Below is a list of the intended purposes and the web analytics services we use.
This information is collected without your explicit consent. However, according to Section 15 of the Telemedia Act, you can object to tracking at any time and your opt-out will remain effective in the future. This means that, should you so desire, HIS will not collect or store any data from your visit to the HIS site. To do this, you must merely accept a single special cookie. This cookie does not contain any information about you and cannot be attributed to a specific person. As soon as the tracking servers read this cookie, the storage of data connected to your visit data will be blocked.
As long as you do not delete this cookie on your computer, no data will be stored. However, this applies only to the computer and browser on which the cookie is stored. If you visit the HIS website from home or work, or use different browsers, you must store the special cookie on each computer and browser you use.
b) Web analytics
If you do not agree to the storage and processing of data from your visit to our site, you may choose to disable the storage and use of your data at any time with a click. In this case, you will receive an opt-out cookie which will be stored in your browser. As a result, Matomo (formerly Piwik) will not collect any data from your session. Please note that when you delete cookies, the opt-out cookie will also be deleted and you may need to reactivate it upon your next visit to our site.
c) Services and content from third parties are incorporated into our online content. This always requires that providers of this content be able to detect a user’s IP address. Without an IP address, third parties cannot send content to the user’s browser. The transmission of an IP address is therefore essential for displaying content. Our website integrates content from the following third parties.

When you use a plugin, for example by clicking the start button of a video, this information is also linked to your user account. You may prevent this by logging out of your own YouTube account and any other YouTube LLC and Google Inc. user accounts and deleting relevant cookies before you use our website.

If you are logged in as a Vimeo member, Vimeo links this information to your personal account. When you use a plugin, for example by clicking the start button of a video, this information is also linked to your user account. You may prevent this by logging out of your own Vimeo account and deleting relevant cookies before you use our website.
